Survival Mode Comes to Minecraft: Pocket Edition

Survival elements have finally arrived for Minecraft: Pocket Edition. A new update brings many of the elements of the PC version to mobile, including zombies, health, mining and tool selection.

Previously, Minecraft: Pocket Edition was released with only creative mode, which Mojang later admitted was "a huge mistake." While the game has already sold more than 700,000 copies despite its limitations, this new update will attempt to bring it one step closer to its PC big brother.

One notable feature still missing from Minecraft: Pocket Edition is crafting. According to Mojang director of business development Daniel Kaplan, plenty of new features are still planned for the future, but progress has been slow due to the fact that only one developer is currently working on the project. Kaplan also points to the different needs of a mobile product vs. a PC one.

"It will be really hard to try to achieve the same thing as the PC since you are not playing on a PC," Kaplan said recently. "My opinion is that it's harder to get a mobile player's attention with a game since I think they will much more easy throw away your game if you don't get their attention early enough."

Minecraft: Pocket Edition was released for Android in October 2011 and hit iOS in November. The update is currently available for Android players and will be arriving on iOS shortly once it's approved by Apple.
